Note that for Turkish characters, effendi and pasha are honorific titles, and that they are placed after the person's name. Effendi corresponds roughly to "Sir". Pasha is a more senior title and corresponds roughly to "Lord".


Erast Petrovich FANDORIN, the (main) protagonist, a Russian volunteer fighting for the Serbs in the war against the Ottoman Empire

Varvara Andreevna SUVOROVA, a "progressive" young woman traveling to Bulgaria to meet her fiancé Pyotr Yablokov

Pyotr YABLOKOV, a young Russian man who has volunteered to serve in the Russian army's war against the Ottoman Empire; he is given a role as a cryptographer; he is the fiancé of Varvara Suvorova

Seamus McLAUGHLIN, an Irish reporter attached to the Russian army

Charles PALADIN, a French reporter attached to the Russian army

Colonel Mikhai LUKAN, in some versions LUCAN, a Roumanian officer attached to the Russian headquarters

Captain Count Hippolyte Alexandrovich ZUROV, a hot-headed Russian officer of the Grodno Hussars (also found in the earlier novel The Winter Queen)

Major-General Mikhail Alexandrovich SOBOLEV, a Russian commander (based on the historical figure Mikhail Skobelev)

Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Kharitonovich KAZANZAKI, an officer of Russian gendarmes

Captain of General Headquarters PEREPYOLKIN,  an officer of the operations section of the general staff

Adjutant General Lavrenty Arkadievich MIZINOV (in some versions Lavrentii), chief of the Special Corps of Gendarmes and head of the Third Section of His Imperial Majesty's Own Chancellery (i.e. the tsar's state security investigation department) 

Chancellor Alexander Mikhailovich GORCHAKOV, a senior Russian government official

ANWAR Effendi, a Turkish politician, intelligencer and spymaster, and a supporter of Midhat Pashsa

MIDHAT Pasha, a powerful Turkish politician and reformer, and the patron of Anwar Effendi

OSMAN NURI Pasha, a Turkish commander
